The long wait is finally over! It’s the moment most of us have been waiting for, including me. Year after year we kept hearing about Verizon iPhone rumors and now its finally here. Starting next month February 10th. Fore more details you can check out Verizon’s official iPhone website.
Should you buy Verizon’s iPhone? It depends, if you don’t care about Verizon’s new LTE 4G upgrade then I recommend you get your hands on one. If think you can wait a little longer then I suggest you wait a while before you get one, just because we know that the LTE model iPhone will be coming soon. As we all know never to buy 1st gen Apple products, better upgrade will be here sometimes in June.
If you’re planning on investing in a new phone and don’t mind sticking to it for two years then get on.
If your planning on signing a new contract or your current contract is coming to an end then go for it. VZW is more prepared than at&t ever was for the iPhone.
If you’re someone who’s on the at&t networking and has a phone don’t be so quick to jump the bandwagon yet. Wait and see what happens when some traffic heads to VZW, perhaps your iPhones will start working better once the network gets some of the load off.

World’s First Large-Scale 4G LTE Wireless Network Expands to More Than 140 Additional U.S. Markets in 2011
LAS VEGAS, NV and BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The operator of the fastest, most advanced 4G network in the United States unveiled a suite of 10 consumer-oriented devices that will run on its 4G LTE network by the middle of this year.
At a news conference at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, Verizon Wireless announced a suite of 10 forthcoming 4G LTE devices – including smartphones from HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; tablets from Motorola and Samsung; a MiFi from Novatel Wireless and a mobile hotspot from Samsung; and two notebooks from HP – which will transform the wireless experience and offer consumers new ways to connect and share their lives at blazingly fast speeds. Verizon expects these consumer-oriented devices to be available by mid-2011, with some available as early as March 2011.
The company also announced it is expanding its 4G LTE network to an additional 140 markets by the end of this year.

Verizon Wireless also introduced new applications that are being fully integrated into the new smartphones and run seamlessly over the 4G LTE network. An upgraded version of Skype mobile takes advantage of video capabilities enabled by 4G LTE’s incredible speed, allowing users to see and hear friends and family when making or receiving Skype-to-Skype video calls. EA’s ROCK BAND leverages the high-speed, low-latency 4G LTE network to provide the next generation of multiplayer gaming. At launch, this will be the first time the game can be played with friends over the mobile network, which means consumers can rock out with their friends like never before with 20 favorite hits – while on the go.
Since its launch 32 days ago, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, laptop users experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
Tony Melone, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Verizon, said, “We will aggressively continue launching 4G LTE markets over the next 36 months. We’ll cover two-thirds of the U.S. population in the next 18 months, and by the end of 2013 we’ll offer our 4G LTE network from coast to coast – everywhere that we offer 3G today. In order to get there, we’ll add more than 140 markets in 2011, including Detroit, Raleigh-Durham, Memphis, Milwaukee, Honolulu, Boise, Mobile, Little Rock, Sioux Falls and Salt Lake City.”

Verizon Wireless’ primary 4G LTE network vendors, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, are providing the underlying infrastructure for the 4G LTE network. Verizon Wireless’ 700 MHz spectrum gives the company specific advantages with 4G, including improved in-building penetration and a contiguous, nationwide network footprint.
Verizon Wireless is also working with rural companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G network in those areas using the tower and backhaul assets of the rural company and Verizon Wireless’ core 4G LTE equipment and premium 700MHz spectrum. Rural operators are leveraging Verizon Wireless’ scale for infrastructure while they keep their customers on the cutting edge of technology. Bluegrass Cellular is the first rural wireless provider to partner with Verizon Wireless, and to date, more than 200 organizations have expressed interest in collaborating with Verizon Wireless to bring 4G LTE to rural America.
Since 2007, when Verizon Wireless jump-started the global 4G LTE ecosystem with its selection of LTE for its 4G technology, the company has developed deep partnerships to spearhead a broad LTE ecosystem, including the LTE Innovation Center in Waltham, Mass., and an LTE Applications Center, soon to open in the San Francisco area.

Over the weekend it was discovered that Android 2.2 was available for the Samsung Epic 4G, but a post on the official Sprint forums says it is only a test build. They warn users not to flash any update files that come from 3rd party developer sites, but the test Android 2.2 build (DK28) is still on Google’s servers so you can trust it is safe.
Sprint warns this software is not yet approved and they recommend that users refrain from loading it, but as long as you understand what you are getting into then go ahead and flash away. Some users at xda-developers have experienced issues with this test build, but others flashed it with no problems at all. The good thing is that it’s possible to return to the latest official build and wait for Android 2.2, but there is no telling how long that might take for Sprint to release it.
To help in the flashing process, here is a quick video that explains how to un-root your Epic 4G and return to a stock build so that this latest build can be flashed.
Manually install Froyo on the Samsung Epic 4G
- Download the zip file from Google’s servers
- Rename the file to “update.zip”
- Save file to root directory on your microSD card
- Boot the Epic 4G into recovery mode (hold down the “Volume Down” button, “Camera” button, and “Power” button simultaniously)
- Install or apply the “update.zip” file from recovery. Use volume keys to navigate menu. Home key is select.
Below is a statement from the Epic Product Manager regarding the leaked release (DK28):
“Sprint is working on a software package for the Samsung Epic4G that will upgrade it to the Froyo version of Android. Over the weekend, some users were able to access and download a test build (DK28) for the Samsung Epic from some 3rd party developer sites. Unfortunately, this is not approved software for Sprint production devices and we strongly recommend that users refrain from loading it.
Software version DI18 is the current production version of software. When new versions of software are available, users will receive a notification from Google on their device stating that an upgrade is available for download and installation. While we are unable to communicate a firm delivery date, rest assured that we are working on a software upgrade to Froyo and hope to have it out in the very near future.”

We are all eagerly waiting for the upcoming 4G network. As some of us maybe on 4G already, for instance Sprint customers. But is it really 4G? Most of the carriers are still in process of testing its 4G network. Verizon Wireless tells us that their 4G speeds will be faster than their 3G speeds. Not just marginally faster, but significantly faster:
Trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. The speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers’ current or promised 3G network speeds.
That is crazy fast but don’t expect those types of results once it has been launched. Having thousands of consumers sharing bandwidth with good/bad spots and objects in the way and all the other variables Verizon says you can reasonably expect 5-12Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless announced today that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network field trials in the United States have demonstrated wireless data speeds that are significantly faster than today’s 3G network speeds. Trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. The speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers’ current or promised 3G network speeds.
Verizon Wireless has been testing its forthcoming 4G LTE network in both Boston and Seattle since August, 2009. Successful data calls involved streaming video, file uploads and downloads, and Web browsing, as well as calls with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to enable voice transmissions over the LTE network. Verizon Wireless engineers report LTE average data rates of 5-12 Mbps on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world environments and will offer Verizon Wireless customers mobile browsing speeds comparable to customers’ current, typical online Internet experience.
“Our LTE rollout plan positions Verizon Wireless to be a global leader in 4G LTE deployment. What is 4G? It depends who you ask.
The ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) defines 4G as International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced which is a cellular system that must have target peak data rates of up to approximately 100 Mbps for a high mobility connection and 1 Gbps for low mobility.
On the other hand, you have a carrier like Sprint which is marketing its WiMax network as “The first and only wireless 4G network from a national carrier”. Their WiMax network has a target peak of 10 Mbps, but real world tests place the speeds between 3-6 Mbps. It is still a heck of a lot faster than most 3G networks, so Sprint felt justified in calling it 4G.
So really, 4G is just a marketing term.
